How should I care for my piano? (contd)

The frequency of piano tuning required will depend upon the factors outlined above, the quality of the piano, and the amount it is played. Six-monthly tunings are recommended for an average piano in regular use. More frequent tunings may be required for older instruments or pianos in professional use. Yearly tunings will suffice to maintain both the value and the tuning stability of pianos kept more as items of furniture.
A more thorough service of the inner workings of a piano may be required every five years or so. Here again, changes in environment, quality of instrument and the amount of use will determine the frequency of action regulation needed. Personal preference will dictate the required frequency of hammer voicing, a process that enhances the tone produced by the felt hammers.

How much will it cost?

The current price for a local piano tuning is £52.00. More distant piano tunings will be charged at a negotiated fee depending on mileage. A fee of £26 must be charged for broken appointments or cancellations with less than 24 hours notice. This fee can be waived in extenuating circumstances. Minor repairs are carried out on site, at a rate of £26/hour. Extensive piano tuning repairs / reconditioning work will normally be undertaken offsite, again at an agreed price.

Piano tuner Mike is listed on UK Pianos and the Tuning & Repair websites.
